FREE Family Arts Day
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27
Eat a Bug! – or ¡Coma un Insecto!
Held in conjunction with Tejas del Oeste al Este: Art From the El Paso Museum of Art

Beaumont, Texas — Back by popular demand, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) is once again serving that creepy, crawly delicacy that has come to be a Southeast Texas favorite at our next Family Arts Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 – BUGS! AMSET will be frying crickets as well as offering a variety of exciting art activities and entertainment.

Following the past three years of record crowds lining up for tasty fried crickets, AMSET’s fall Family Arts Day has come to be called “Eat a Bug Day!” What began as an activity to celebrate Surrealist art has embedded itself, quite appropriately, into the quarterly event held closest to Halloween.

“It is so surprising to see kids going back two and three times to eat Bug Participantsmore bugs,” said AMSET Assistant Curator of Education Andy Gardner. “We set a record last October for the most attended Family Arts Day with 2,200 people, and we want to have even more this year. Every parent should bring their most finicky eater and challenge them to try a bug, and we bet they will go back for seconds.”

Also keeping with the harrowing holiday theme, AMSET will resurrect another popular activity for children – decorating sugar skulls. These skulls are traditionally used as part of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Latin American holiday celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2.

To further usher in Halloween, children are encouraged to wear costumes to Family Arts Day.

Quarterly Family Arts Days are free and open to the public. The event features fun, hands-on art activities that are related to AMSET’s current exhibitions, refreshments and entertainment. All activities are free and art materials are provided.

This program is made possible in part by Beaumont New Car and Truck Association, Dorothy Anne & C.W. Conn Fund of Communities Foundation of Texas, ExxonMobil, Lucy Fanette, H-E-B, Regina Rogers – In honor of Lynn Castle and staff, Southeast Texas Arts Council, Sam’s Club, Sammy Page/UBS, Susy & Scott Sherron, Mr. & Mrs. Mark Steinhagen, TARGET, Wal-Mart, Junior League of Beaumont (in kind) and by Drs. Lulu Smith and Wesley Washburn.

The Mission of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas is to provide education, inspiration and creative vision to the people of our culturally diverse region through our collections, exhibitions, public programs, and outreach in the visual arts.
