We love taking photos of anything and everything. We just wish we were better at it. So, we turned to Michael Cate, owner of Applause! Photo to teach us a few tricks for taking great photos.
Get great pictures at home. Try these tips:
Get on the subject's level. Meaning, if you are taking a photo of a child, bend down to make the camera even with their height instead of pointing the camera down from way up above.
When photographing people, let their expression be natural. Asking them to change their smile doesn't adequately capture who they are.
To photograph children, give the child something to do. Snap away during the activity. You'll be able to display their personality in the photo this way.
It's time to take your family portrait. There are a ton of photographers in this area. What should you look for to get the best?
Go with a photographer that is certified. This means that the photographer has passed a written test and have had photos judged by a panel of Master Photographers. Look for the letters "CPP" following their name.
Ask to see a portfolio or visit their gallery.
Ask for referral from friends. Find out if photography is the photographer's full-time job or is it just a hobby?
No matter what subject you are taking a photo of, keep in mind that the picture is a memory. Photography can be treasured for a lifetime and leave behind a legacy to future generations. For Michael Cate, his journey to being a full-time photographer began over 30 years ago when he worked for the newspaper while in high school. His first published work involved shooting action shots for sports and crime scenes for the police department. After several years as a young photographer, Michael began to train with Master Photographers and continues to do so today. You can see his work (by appointment only) at his new gallery in Beaumont located adjacent to The Enchanted Cottage on Calder. Call Applause! at 729.2388 for an appointment. His work can also be seen at www.applausephoto.com.
