Beaumont, Texas — Just when parents thought they had exhausted all activities for their children during summer break, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) comes to the rescue with another Family Arts Day – this time taking participants back to frontier days. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, is FREE and open to the public, and will feature a variety of exciting art activities and entertainment.
“Family Arts Day on the Frontier” is held in conjunction with the Frank Reaugh: The Texas Frontier and Felix “Fox” Harris exhibitions.
* Activities inspired by the “Dean of Texas Painters” Frank Reaugh will include plein aire (outdoor) painting, drawing with pastels and sun prints. Children will even have the opportunity to sketch a live longhorn just as Reaugh did over 100 years ago.
* Participants can also make folk art totem poles like those of Beaumont self-taught artist Felix “Fox” Harris and be the first to visit AMSET’s newly opened permanent installation of Harris’ amazing work.
“This Family Arts Day will give children and adults the opportunity to compare the work of a well-trained artist who lived 100 years ago and worked all over Texas with the art of a man who cleared his own path to art-making a century later,” said AMSET Curator of Education Sandra Laurette. “Then they can make their own artwork in that style.”
AMSET provides free cookies and punch to children at Family Arts Day. Lunch items are also available for a small charge. Family Arts Day is a quarterly program and one of AMSET’s most popular.
