It’s election time! Who should you vote for? We asked the same question of ourselves. We can see our Southeast Texas candidates on television and read about them in the papers, but we want to know more than that. What makes these people tick? Are they involved with their families? Are they funny, serious or can they cook? We think that getting to know our candidates for more than their political agenda will give us a little motivation when we hit the polls on May 12.

*Buzz Creator’s Note: We’ll be spending a few days on each candidate and before May 12, you’ll have had a chance to get to know every candidate running for mayor in Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange. We are not endorsing any one candidate, but rather showcasing each one for their uniqueness. We encourage you to exercise your right to vote!

Becky Ames wants to be the next Beaumont Mayor.

She's spunky, energetic,

experienced and in love with our city.

So what does Becky bring to the table? She has been the executive director of Atria Collier Park, an Atria Senior Living Group community, for 11 years. In this, she is responsible for total operations including finance, management and personnel. Her occupation compliments her 13 years of service on the Beaumont City Council in which she has always supported and voted for improvements in every area of Beaumont (we love that!), voted for tax reductions (double love!), and took part in emergency planning before Hurricane Rita and the recovery efforts thereafter.

Our city is great. However, there are some things that could be happening, but are not. Here are a few of those “things” that Becky will work towards as mayor (see www.amesformayor.com for a complete list of Becky’s goals):

  • World class customer service from city employees. If you want to open a business in Beaumont, Becky wants it to be easy for you to get the help and information you need.

  • City Hall In The Mall- Make city information accessible to Beaumont residents by putting it in a community gathering place such as Parkdale Mall.

  • Visit with neighborhood associations at their meetings without speaking time limits to really hear out community needs.

Becky may be constantly seeking ways to better our Beaumont, but she also likes to have a little fun, too. Listen in as we get to the heart of Becky Ames.

What do you do for fun? “I love to cook and entertain. I’ll make anything from homestyle cooking to stuffed red snapper. I chaired the Julie Rogers Gift of Life Breast Cancer Survivor Program in which we published the cookbook, Shakin’, Bakin’ and Celebratin.’ I’ve also compiled recipes for our family cookbook. My friends say, ‘When Becky invites you over for dinner, you go!’”

Becky’s Top 6 Favorites…

Beauty Product- Clinique Clarifying Lotion #2. Been using it since high school!

Animal- Her chihuahua, Johnny. He’s the center of attention and always the focus of Christmas cards!

Dessert- Anything with lemon, but usually likes to save the calories for the real deal (dinner)!

Vacation Spot- The ocean. Dreams of going to the Greek Isles someday.

Movie- "Steel Magnolias"

Beaumont Memory- Seeing public & private sectors revitalize Downtown Beaumont

If you had out of town guests, what top 3 things would you be sure to do with them in Beaumont?

1- Go Downtown

2- Cook & have friends over to my home

3- Go for a walk at River Front Park and talk about the vision of that development.

How did you meet your husband? “We met while working for the same company. Hit it off immediately, got married and have been for nearly 24 years. We have a solid friendship and love doing things together.”

From economic growth to cookin' in the kitchen, Becky Ames is ready to be our mayor. Last week, we heard from Fanniece Hawkins, who is also ready to be our mayor. Neither one of them can get elected without our votes! Please exercise your right to vote and hit the polls early on April 30! If you operate better on the last minute, the official voting date is May 12. This is your chance to Get Involved!

Thank you Becky for taking time to visit with us! Good luck! To learn more about Becky Ames, visit www.amesformayor.com.
