Steps to Becoming Your Own Fashion Stylist
The number one step to becoming your own fashion stylist is...
PURGE!
As they say, no pain no gain. So before you can even begin your journey towards fashion independence you must rid yourself of those items that are holding you back! Go through your closet, dresser, and those under-the-bed containers and assess every item you own. This includes clothing, shoes, and undergarments. Criteria for getting rid of something includes: worn-out with (unfashionably-placed) holes, doesn’t fit beautifully, or you haven’t worn it in 6 months.
Once you have culled out those items, place them in 3 piles: Throw Away, Give Away, and Can’t Quite Bear to Part with It.
Throw Away items are those that are so worn out no one could get any use out of them. Give Away items can be given to friends, Goodwill, and professional clothing to Dress for Success. This is an organization that outfits low-income women in professional clothing in preparation for job interviews. And if there’s something that you haven’t worn in 6 months but you just can’t get rid of it, place it in a box under your bed for the next 3 months to see if you miss it. If 3 months pass with no ache of longing, it’s time to part with it!
As you go through this process, keep in mind that your clothing should be things that you LOVE and that flatter you in fit. If you like the style, but not how a shirt fits your arms so you haven’t worn it since you bought it, it’s gotta go!
Now that your closets and drawers are clean and spacious, it’s time to start thinking about your new wardrobe!
