Eco-Fest at Shangi-la
From Associated Press, The Orange Leader-
The Celebration begins today at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, and what a line-up of events are in store.
The Earth Week celebration begins today at Shangri La, located at 2111 W. Park Ave. in Orange, and continues through Sunday. Although Earth Day is Thursday, this year’s events culminate on April 24 with the return of Eco-Fest.
All Earth Week activities, such as boat rides, the star party, a butterfly release, and even children’s activities, are open to the public, but many do require advance reservations. All events require a ticket purchase.
Events open to the public include a Star Party to be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., today. Members of the Astronomical Society of Southeast Texas (ASSET) will be on site with telescopes offering amazing views of the night sky. Guests are invited to attend, and even briang their own telescope, and enjoy amazing views of the moon, planets and the Lyrids meteor shower and more.
Another event open to the public is on how to “Make a Flower Press” from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, where attendees will be able to make a flower press and create beautiful objects through the use of previously pressed flowers.
One of the most popular events at Earth Week each year is the Butterfly Release, which will be held between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., Thursday, in the Shangri La courtyard. This is a great event for children of all ages, especially if enough butterflies are available for each person to release their own.
Eco-Fest is Saturday and, if Mother Nature cooperates, is always a fantastic way to enjoy the weekend and celebrate Earth Week.
Both educational and fun, vendors will on site providing information about Earth-friendly products, services and opportunities. There will also be music and boat rides, as well as children’s activities like face-painting, games and skits and much more.
For more information about these events and others which require reservations, visit www.shangrilagardens.org online or call the Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center office at 409-670-9799.
