Find Your Inner Fashion Stylist
By Grace Mathis
So if you’re reading this, you’re (probably) a woman. Woman or not, most of us in this day and age are concerned about what we wear to some extent. Count me in for sure. Therefore, I am writing not as a fashion expert, but as a normal woman who loves clothing and accessories (and shopping) and who is constantly striving to improve my wardrobe.
Well, for the next little while I will be discussing some easy practical steps and even mentalities that can lead you to your best wardrobe ever. I want to first tell you my philosophy for personal style: A reflection of you not dictated by trends, but drawing from them. Keep this in mind as we go through this process.
The first question to ask yourself is:
“What do I like?”
There are several ways to find the answer to this question. First of all, look in your closet. What are the pieces that you LOVE? What is it you love about them? The fit? The style, the color? Is there a common style to those things, such as preppy, bohemian or classic? If not, that’s okay, maybe your style is simply eclectic.
Second way, next time you go shopping, only choose things you REALLY love. And don’t worry about what everyone would think when you wear it. I mean, it’s one thing to get a friend’s advice to see if something makes you look pregnant. But other than that, your wardrobe is about what YOU like.
The third piece of advice comes from Elle magazine’s new style advisor, indie actress Chloe Sevigny. Some of you may disagree with some of her unusual fashion choices, but you can’t argue that the girl has her own style. And I applaud that. She said that one thing she considers when making fashion choices is what she liked as a child. I know I was a frilly, prissy girl and thinking about her statement made me realize that some of my fave pieces that I currently own are very feminine and girly. I was also an accessory freak as a child (my parents have a great bag lady pic of me) and to this day I feel naked without earrings. So, what did you like when you were in grade school? Now, adult-ize that look and you will be on your way to finding your personal style!
