Beaumont, Texas (November 2, 2007)-Wesley United Methodist Church of Nederland is inviting everyone to come out for "Journey to Bethlehem," a free outdoor live nativity drama on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 7th-9th from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
"When we first started this, all we really had was a shack and Palmetto
branches," says Patsy Wagner, coordinator for the event. "Over the years, it has grown into a scene out of Bethlehem during the time Jesus was born," she continues.
Viewers are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and watch in wonder as actors and live animals portray the story of the birth of Christ. Shows begin every thirty minutes with a craft area for the kids to create their own holiday art and a manger scene for families to have their picture taken between shows. Children have the opportunity to pet the animals between shows as well. With over 150 participants and 20 live animals making the event possible each year, Journey to Bethlehem has grown to into a large tourist attraction for the Nederland area bringing in an average of 1,500 to 2,000 spectators over the three night period.
Wagner says the biggest draw of public interest seems to be the animals. "We are sure to include sheep, goats and a camel to make the story of Christmas more authentic," she says. With last year's addition of the King Herod scene, the event continues its tradition of growth and success to compliment its 20-year history. Wesley United Methodist Church encourages people to come out emphasizing that the event is their gift to the community. "It is our way to tell the story of the birth of Christ in a totally non-commercial way and welcome everyone to experience the real meaning of Christmas," says Wagner.
Journey to Bethlehem takes place at Wesley United Methodist Church in Nederland located at 3515 Helena Avenue. For more information, call Wesley United Methodist Church at (409) 722-7065 or contact Patsy Wagner at (409) 722-2779.
