21st Annual Protégé
High School Art
Competition and Exhibition
Entry Deadline: January 22, 2008
Reception and Awards Ceremony 6 p.m., Thursday, February 28
Works on view at AMSET February 29 - March 30, 2008
A popular question asked of many professional artists by aspiring young talent is “How did you get started exhibiting your artwork?” The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) has the answer with the 21st Annual Protégé Competition and Exhibition, a program that offers 12th-grade students the opportunity to begin taking the steps necessary to become part of the greater world of art.
AMSET believes it is important for young artists to have an early opportunity to experience art competitions and, if accepted, learn how to properly exhibit their work. The Protégé Competition and Exhibition is offered to all senior students in Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Newton, Orange and Tyler counties. Participants need not be part of an organized art class to enter, but all artwork entered must be original to the student.
The deadline for students to enter is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22. This year’s Protégé juror is Gerry Wubben, a professor of art at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. He will review the entries and select a number of works to be exhibited. Each artist whose work is selected to be in the Protégé exhibition will also attend an archival framing workshop given by the AMSET curatorial department.
Awards given will include:
* First Place – four-year art scholarship to the Lamar University Department of Art and a $225 gift certificate for art supplies from Manning’s Supply
> The first place winner’s teacher or school will also receive a $125 gift certificate for classroom art supplies.
* Second Place – four-year art scholarship to the Lamar University Department of Art and a $150 gift certificate for art supplies
* Third Place – $100 gift certificate for art supplies
* Five Honorable Mentions – $50 gift certificate for art supplies
Accepted works for the Protégé exhibit will be displayed in AMSET’s Conn Gallery. AMSET will host an opening reception and awards ceremony from 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28. The event is free and open to the public. Protégé will be on display at AMSET through March 30, and will then travel to selected area venues for further exposure and outreach in the Southeast Texas community.
