Don't forget the Teacher!
By Anna Sites
So many gifts to buy and so little time. With all the holiday hubbub, it’s sometimes easy for any mom of school-age children to overlook a very important person on their list: the teacher(s). Even if they aren’t overlooked, it can be difficult to figure out the perfect gift. Give these gift ideas a try for the deserving educators on your list.
Personalized Pots- If your child’s teacher has a green thumb, a small flower pot is a great gift. Have your child use acrylic paint to make a thumb print flower or two on the side and paint the lip of the pot in a coordinating color. Include a pack of seeds, wrap in cellophane and tie the top with a ribbon. A silk flower can be added to the bow.
Get Inked- Not just for businessmen, the personalized pen is both thoughtful and useful. Have the teacher’s name, the year and a short message engraved. She’ll feel special every time she writes an A on your kid’s paper (well, hopefully it‘s an A).
Layers of Flavor- Super simple and super sweet, just take a jar your child has decorated and fill with the ingredients to make the teacher’s favorite cookies, making sure all layers are well defined. Include baking instructions on a card strung on a ribbon tied around the top.
Movie Night- Fill a plastic “Popcorn” container (available at Target or discount stores) or a large bowl with candy bars, popcorn packets and a movie store gift card or one of those internet movie rental coupons we all seem to have lying around.
Relaxation Kit- Roll up an inexpensive fleece blanket and tie the middle with ribbon. Place chocolate dipped spoons (bought or easily made at home with disposable spoons and melting chocolate), tea bags or coffee, hot chocolate, a small candle and a note instructing them to relax and enjoy their goodies in a clear baggie. Tie the bag onto the blanket and form a bow with the excess ribbon.
The Gift of Plastic- What’s the one gift that always fits, is always in style and is never returned? A gift card. Teachers love ‘em too. Get one for Manning’s, Office Depot or another supply store and it’s sure to be much appreciated.
Handy Tags- For any gift, have your child put a handprint on the card or piece of paper before writing on it. This cute added touch truly says “from me to you”.
Whether homemade or store bought, the best gift is one with thought behind it. If you’re still in a fog as to what to get that important person in your child’s life, simply ask. ‘Tis better to be asked what you’d like to receive than to receive one more ceramic apple.
