It’s election time! Who should you vote for? We asked the same question of ourselves. We can see our Southeast Texas candidates on television and read about them in the papers, but we want to know more than that. What makes these people tick? Are they involved with their families? Are they funny, serious or can they cook? We think that getting to know our candidates for more than their political agenda will give us a little motivation when we hit the polls on May 12.
Hey Port Arthur! Meet Zulema Escobedo. She's new to the political scene, but she's already shooting for the top. Zulema Escobedo... Farmers Insurance Agent, wife, mother of 3, lifelong resident of Port Arthur, and perhaps your next mayor. Zulema has been self-employed for the last 8 years, beginning when she was just in her mid-20's. Highly motivated by goal-setting, this top insurance agent knows how to see where she wants to go and takes the steps to get there. That, she says, is one of the best attributes she brings to the table. You may have seen Zulema in your neighborhood recently. She's been going door-to-door to meet you and ask for your vote. She has been apart of every social class, from "humble beginnings" to seeing blessings from using the talents God has given her. For that reason, she wants to be the voice that speaks up for all citizens. As mayor, not only will Zulema do that, but she also will work to bring economic growth to Downtown Port Arthur (combine recreation and business) and preserve it's historic beauty.
Who is Zulema Escobedo?
As a little girl, Zulema wanted to be (of all things) a mayor! Here's the story behind that...
"When I was little, my mom used to take us to Kress. I would look at the window and ask my mom what 'all those buildings' were on the street. She explained city hall to me. I found it facinating and decided then that I wanted to be mayor!" Sitting at Kress, eating hamburgers with her siblings, is a favorite childhood memory for Zulema.
What's the one thing you cook well?
"Everyone always asks for my lasagna." She must be doing something right!
What's your favorite spot in Port Arthur?
"Lakeshore. I love to drive on that street. It's peaceful and I love looking at all the beautiful, old homes."
What has been your biggest challenge in raising your 3 daughters?
"My first 2 daughters are 6 years apart. It was really challenging to start over having a baby after having a child that could do so much for herself. Then, my third is right behind the second being only 14 months apart. Balancing the age differences has been crazy!"
Let us in on a great date spot...
"My husband and I usually drive into Beaumont for Italian food. There's just something about Italian food that says romance!"
Thank you, Zulema, for taking time to chat with us! Good Luck! For more information on Zulema Escobedo, visit www.voteforzulema.com.
